Thoughts About Amazon Acquiring Perpule

Amazon acquired an Indian startup Perpule, which has helped many stores get online in the region. It's an interesting direction but it remains to be seen if Selz + Perpule is a trend-line, or something else? The thing about Amazon, there is a plan. It just may take some time to discover it from the outside. Here are a few thoughts this morning about this acquisition:

  • Both acquisitions were in APAC, something that I think it makes sense to pay attention to.

  • So, unlike others, not just focused in the US and Europe, these eCommerce platform markets are more "Red Ocean". Many APAC and MENA markets are still using open source (like relatively old Magento versions) or nearly free solutions - so there is a lot of opportunity for disruption.

  • APAC is going to continue to grow faster than the West, and have more unique / diverse needs

Amazon like Apple in the past is investing in trends and growth. If a particular sector is growing much faster than another, it pays to be ahead of it.
