DoorDash Adds JC Penney and Increasing Takes Fight To Instacart

There is recent news of a new tie-up between JC Penney and Doordash.

At the same time, the company is investing in curbside capabilities as well. This means they will be on a delivery marketplace, as well as have their own same-day capabilities.

That's good. The retailers that are outsourcing everything to marketplaces are going to be the ones with the most problems.

On the other hand.

I think this says more about Instacart than about Doordash right now. In the delivery marketplace, Doordash seems to have the momentum and a focused strategy -- increase assortment at all costs.

Doordash is betting that wide assortment = more consumer use cases to become that "super instant shopping app".

Instacart? Doesn't seem focused, management changes, and irrelevant acquisitions (Caper).

There will be a solid segment of the market that wants things same day, even from traditional department stores.
